Dentistry
General dentistry is the generic term for the primary dentist that provides routine dental work for their patients. They manage the overall oral health care of the teeth and gums. These dentists are qualified to perform dental work such as tooth whitening, regular check-ups, cavity filling and root canals. Some will perform tooth extractions as well. Many general dentists will specialize in children while others prefer only adult clientele.
Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry. An Endodontist is qualified to treat patients for extreme root canal work and tooth restoration. They are trained to deal with many diseases of the gums and teeth. An endodontist will usually remove infected and damage tissue from inside of the tooth. This helps to save teeth from extensive damage as opposed to having them extracted. If the tooth can not be saved than the endodontist will perform a root canal for the patient.
Orthodontics is one of the most popular dental treatments done today. Orthodontic procedures can help with over crowding of teeth. This is a common problem for people that have narrower jaw bones and the teeth do not have enough room to grow in properly. They can also help with protruding front teeth. Reverse bite and overbite are other common problems today and can be fixed by an orthodontist. There are many other oral issues that an orthodontist can perform such as impacted teeth and all types of braces. Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic. Metal is the most common type of braces used in orthodontic work today.
Prosthodontics is a dental field that specializes in major oral issues. Dentures, bridges, are just a couple of the issues that prosthondtics can help with. Bone health and reconstruction of jaw bones can also be taken care of by visiting this specialized dentist. They specialize in treatments for a condition called TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder. Maxillofacial prosthetics is the next step for the prosthondist. They specialize in malformations of the head and neck. These malformations are usually caused by cancer, trauma and birth defects. The Maxillifacial Prosthodontist is trained in this specialty and can handle many types of complex cases in their patients.
A Periodontist is a dentist that specializes in the structure of teeth and tooth diseases. They can diagnose and treat oral diseases such as in the gums, soft tissues and the bones supporting the teeth. They use surgical and non surgical treatment for their patients. They will also prescribe different medications to their patients that show signs of any type of periodontal disease.
